Many of us love getting in our car and taking it out on the open road. With over 200,000 miles of road in the UK, there are plenty of amazing driving routes to explore. For today’s blog post, we discuss three awesome road trips to take in the United Kingdom.

Snake Pass

Snake Pass is 1,680 feet (510 m) above the sea level, located between Manchester and Sheffield in Northern England.

Known for its twisting bends and stunning surrounding scenery, Snake Pass is closed during the winter months when the roads become dangerously icy. However, this road can be closed at any time of the year if the road isn’t clear of snow.

The asphalted road includes a variety of steep sections, elevation changes and adverse cambers which can make it extremely slippery in wet weather conditions.

There are two routes to reach the highest point of the mountain and drivers will face a 14km assent in which they will elevate 302 metres.

Black Mountain Pass

Black Mountain Pass has been referred to as a rollercoaster on tarmac. The road cuts across the Western part of the Brecon Beacons and peaks at 1,600ft before dropping down to Llandovery.

The challenging road includes a variety of tight corners and fast sections, but be warned, you may also encounter some sheep on the road.

Black Mountain Pass is an infamous road located in breathtaking surroundings and is often used by driving clubs and enthusiasts.

Cheddar Gorge

Cheddar Gorge road (B3135) is 14 miles long and includes 22 bends. Watch out for the surprisingly sharp corners and enjoy some long straight sections as you make your way across.

Twists and turns are aplenty – as can be expected with the Gorge dictating the route. The roads can be steep, with a maximum of 16% gradient and you will find yourself surrounded by cliff faces towering over at the side of you as your drive.
